5 Steps to Maintain Your Power Steering System

Power steering makes driving easier, but if it fails, it’s a big problem. Here's how to maintain it:

1. Check fluid levels:
   Most steering issues start from fluid leaks. Low levels can cause hard steering and squealing. Check before long trips and during oil changes.

2. Inspect hoses:
   Two hoses carry power steering fluid — high-pressure and return lines. Watch for leaks or damage.

3. Change the filter annually:
   Many drivers don’t know there’s a steering fluid filter. Replace it yearly to protect the pump.

4. Check fluid quality:
   Dark or contaminated fluid means it's time to flush and replace it.

5. Replace the pump if needed:
   Dirty or low fluid can ruin the pump. If you hear a whining noise while driving, the pump may be failing. Replacing it in time prevents costly repairs.
