10 automatic transmission care tips from Hunters Garage to keep your transmission running smoothly

Check the transmission fluid regularly. In many cars, checking transmission fluid is as simple as checking engine oil: with the engine idling, pull out the dipstick, wipe it, reinsert, wait, and then check. The fluid should be bright red, clear, and smell slightly sweet. If it’s cloudy, dark, or smells like rotten fish, visit a service center.
Use the correct transmission fluid specified for your vehicle.
Maintain the engine cooling system, as it also cools the transmission fluid.
Follow a fluid change interval: most manufacturers recommend a change around 90,000 km, depending on the brand. Even if a change isn’t mandatory, we recommend replacing it after 120,000 km.
Do not shift while moving. Always come to a complete stop before switching between Reverse and Drive.
Warm up your car, especially in winter, before driving.
Avoid driving long-term on a spare tire, as this can overload the transmission and other components.
If there’s a transmission filter, replace it along with the fluid.
Avoid towing under harsh conditions, such as high temperatures, which can cause fluid breakdown and serious damage.
Have annual inspections for leaks, fluid level, color, and odor—this is good preventative maintenance.
