When can you get by with local body repair?

Small accidents: when can you do with local repairs, and when is a full body restoration needed? | Hunters Garage

When can you get by with local body repair?

Small accidents happen even to the most experienced drivers. A snagged bumper in a parking lot, an unnoticed pillar in the rearview camera, or a characteristic dent from the door of a neighboring car - situations familiar to almost everyone. And at this moment, a logical question arises: is local repair enough, or does the damage require full-fledged bodywork intervention?

At Hunters Garage, we work with such cases every day and help customers choose the right solution - not superfluous, but also not compromising in terms of safety and durability of the car.

  1. PDR - paintless dent removal: when does it really work?

PDR (Paintless Dent Repair) technology allows you to remove dents without damaging the paintwork. This is one of the least invasive repair methods that preserves the factory paint and reduces the time the car is in the service.

PDR works well in cases where the damage is cosmetic and does not affect the metal structure. This method is most often used if the car has received:

  • a small dent from the door
  • a dent after hail
  • a minor "dent" no paint cracks
  • slight bending of the metal without sharp breaks

When PDR is possible:

  • paint coating is not damaged
  • metal is deformed, but not torn
  • damage area is accessible to tools (doors, hood, wings, roof in most cases)
  • When PDR is not suitable:
  • there is a crack or chip in the LFP
  • there is a deep metal break
  • damage is located on sharp edges or edges of the part

PDR — This is a quick solution that allows you to preserve the factory look of the car without painting.

  1. Local painting: when is it enough?

Local painting — is a compromise between minimal intervention and complete repainting of the part. It is used when the paint is already damaged, but the deformation itself is not critical.

This repair option is suitable if there are scratches or chips, a crack in the paint has appeared after a light impact, a small part of the part is damaged, and the defect needs to be eliminated without painting the entire element.

Local painting is possible if the area of damage does not exceed 20-30% of the part,

there is no serious deformation of the metal, the color of the car allows for a seamless transition (metallic and mother-of-pearl are possible, but require more precise selection).

This method allows you to quickly restore the aesthetics of the car without unnecessary costs and loss of the original coating on the entire part.

  1. Full body repair: when can you not do without it?

Sometimes the damage looks insignificant from the outside, but has serious consequences inside the structure. These are the most dangerous cases, because hidden deformation can affect the handling and safety of the car.

Full body repair after an accident includes a set of works, including restoration or replacement of metal, complete painting of the part, replacement of damaged elements, restoration of body geometry, checking gaps and structural rigidity

Signs that a full body repair is needed: broken geometry (doors do not close, hood skew, shifted gaps), severe dent or metal fracture, damaged load-bearing elements, cracked bumper or plastic over a large area, bent brackets or side members, after an impact the car pulls to the side or the steering wheel behavior has changed.

Even a small impact to the front or side can affect safety elements or attachment points.

  1. How to understand what repairs are needed right for you?

At Hunters Garage, we never determine the scope of work «by eye». Each case begins with a detailed inspection and diagnostics to see the real picture of the damage.

During the inspection, we assess the degree of deformation, the condition of the paintwork, body geometry, the presence of hidden damage, symmetry and compliance of gaps.

After that, we offer the best repair option — from PDR and local restoration to full body repair.
