When is chassis diagnostics needed?

5 “red flags” when you need an immediate chassis diagnosis | Hunters Garage

When is chassis diagnostics needed?

The chassis takes all the impact from the road: holes, potholes, curbs, sharp maneuvers and overloads. That is why its wear and tear is inevitable. The problem is different: most malfunctions begin imperceptibly and gradually, and the car owner turns to the service only when a minor malfunction has turned into a serious and expensive repair.

At Hunters Garage we regularly see the same picture: a car comes in “just for diagnostics”, but in fact — several months of ignoring the signals that the car was giving even earlier. To avoid this, we have collected 5 clear red flags that mean: chassis diagnostics should be done as soon as possible.

  1. Knock or dull sound when driving over bumps

If the car starts knocking on speed bumps, potholes or even small bumps - this is almost always a suspension problem. Such sounds do not appear “just like that” and do not disappear by themselves.

Most often, the source of the knock is elements that are constantly working under load and are the first to fail: worn shock absorbers, «killed» silent blocks, play in ball joints, problems with stabilizer struts.

It is important to understand: the earlier you pay attention to these sounds, the easier and cheaper the repair will be.

  1. Squeak or sound of «metal on metal» when turning

Squeaks when turning the steering wheel, starting or braking — this is no longer “discomfort”, but a direct reason to go to the service station. Especially if the sound is repeated regularly.

In most cases, the cause is the initial destruction or operation of parts “dry”: dry or damaged hinges, wedging of steering tips, worn rubber bushings,  the initial stage of destruction of shock absorber mounts.

Such sounds often mean that the part is still working, but its resource is almost exhausted.

  1. Vibrations in the steering wheel or body

Vibration — is one of the most dangerous symptoms, because it affects not only comfort, but also the handling of the car. It can appear at speed, during acceleration or even at idle.

There are usually several reasons for this symptom, and without a comprehensive check, they can be easily confused: bent wheel rims, wheel imbalance, play in the steering rack, worn joints or cross members, faulty engine mounts.

That is why at Hunters Garage we recommend not to "guess" but to immediately do a full diagnosis.

  1. The car "pulls" to the side

If the car has stopped going straight and you have to constantly steer - this is a signal for immediate inspection. Even if the steering wheel seems “smooth”, the problem may be much deeper.

The most common causes of this behavior are camber violations, wear of suspension elements, uneven tire pressure, and damage to the steering rods.

Ignoring this symptom is almost guaranteed to lead to rapid tire wear and poor handling.

  1. Uneven tire wear

The condition of the tires — is one of the most accurate “indicators” of chassis problems. If one side of the tread is worn, the wear occurs in waves or at different angles — it's not a rubber issue, but a suspension issue.

Most often, this picture indicates incorrect camber, worn shock absorbers, play in the steering system, skewed suspension elements.

  1. When should you do a full computer diagnostics of your car?

If you notice at least one of the listed symptoms - don't delay. Computer diagnostics together with a chassis inspection allows you to see the real condition of each component and prevent serious breakdowns.

At Hunters Garage we recommend: checking the chassis every 10-15 thousand km, doing diagnostics after a strong impact on a pothole, contacting us immediately if you feel any changes in the behavior of the car.
