Seasonal car inspection
What to include in your spring and fall checklist | Hunters Garage
Seasonal preparation of the car — an investment in the safety and resource of the car
Seasonal preparation of the car — is not a formality and not «for a check». It is a direct investment in your safety, comfort and durability of the car.
At Hunters Garage, we regularly see how after winter or on the eve of cold weather, the car needs a much deeper inspection than it seems to the owner at first glance.
That is why comprehensive seasonal diagnostics — is a key procedure that allows you to detect hidden malfunctions in time and avoid expensive repairs in the future.
Below — a detailed checklist of what to check after winter frosts and before the onset of cold weather so that every trip remains safe and predictable.
- Battery and starting system
Winter — the most difficult period for the battery. Low temperatures reduce its capacity, and short trips do not allow the battery to fully charge. Before the cold weather, it is important to be sure that the car will start on the first try.
At Hunters Garage, we check not only "whether it turns over", but also the real state of the starting system, the real state of the battery under load, the operation of the generator, the condition of the terminals and the presence of oxidation, the stability of the power supply during start-up.
- Diagnostics of technical fluids
Technical fluids — are the circulatory system of the car. They directly affect the resource of the engine, gearbox and brake system. After winter or before cold weather, their condition often differs from "normal".
During diagnostics, we pay attention not only to the level, but also to the actual condition:
- engine oil - we assess its condition after cold starts and short trips;
- brake fluid - we check the level, color and humidity, which is critical for safety;
- coolant - whether it has retained its protective properties;
- washer fluid - replace with seasonal composition (winter or summer).
- Brake system
Winter moisture, salt and temperature changes often leave their mark on the brakes. Even if the car brakes "as usual", this does not mean that the system is in perfect condition.
The seasonal checklist includes:
- assessing the condition of the brake discs;
- measuring the thickness of the pads;
- checking the brake hoses;
- testing the uniformity of braking.
In wet road conditions and unstable weather, working brakes are the basis of your safety.
- Suspension and steering
Potholes, ice and constant loads in winter seriously affect the suspension. In autumn, the situation is similar — Lower temperatures accelerate the wear of rubber and moving parts.
During the inspection, we check:
- shock absorbers;
- ball bearings;
- silent blocks;
- steering linkages and tips;
- springs and general condition of the chassis.
A working suspension means control over the car, stability on the road and comfort every day.
- Tires: pressure, wear, seasonality
Tires are the only contact the car has with the road. Their condition directly affects braking, handling and traction.
In the spring, we check for “hernias” after winter potholes, we assess the evenness of wear, and monitor the remaining tread.
In the fall, we replace summer tires with winter tires, check the date of manufacture and microcracks,
we adjust the pressure, which drops with decreasing temperature.
- Lighting system and electricity
Faulty lighting is one of the most common causes of accidents in the dark. Temperature changes and humidity often affect electronics imperceptibly for the driver.
At Hunters Garage we check headlights, dimensions, brake lights, fog light operation,
headlight correctors, and the condition of electronics after seasonal loads.
- Body and underbody inspection
After winter, salt deposits often remain on the body, and the underbody — the first signs of corrosion. If you don't react in time, minor problems turn into expensive repairs.
We recommend a detailed underbody wash, inspect risk areas for rust, and perform anti-corrosion treatment before winter.
- Air and cabin filters
Clean air — it is not only the comfort in the cabin, but also the correct operation of the engine. Dirty filters are often overlooked, although their impact is felt every day.
During diagnostics, we check the engine air filter; cabin filter; the condition of the air conditioning system (especially in spring).
- Windshield and wipers
After winter, wipers often lose elasticity, and chips appear on the windshield, which can eventually turn into cracks.
Diagnostics include checking the condition of the wiper blades; testing the quality of glass cleaning; searching for chips and microcracks.
