What Does the Check Engine Light Mean?

The Check Engine indicator lights up when the car’s diagnostics system detects a fault in the engine or related systems.

Common Causes:

  • Ignition issues: Spark plugs, coils, or wires.

  • Fuel system problems: Fuel pump, injectors, or fuel pressure sensors.

  • Exhaust system issues: Catalytic converter, oxygen sensor, or particulate filter.

  • EGR system: Dirty or faulty EGR valve.

  • Sensor failures: Engine temperature, MAF, throttle position sensors.

What to Do if the Light Comes On:

  1. Pull over safely and turn off the engine.

  2. Check oil and coolant levels.

  3. Restart the engine.

  4. If the light remains, consult a mechanic or auto service.

Light Colors:

  • Red: Severe problem – stop immediately and check the car.

  • Yellow: Less critical – can keep driving but service soon.

Ignoring the Check Engine light may lead to engine damage and costly repairs. Always diagnose the issue as soon as possible.
