How Often to Change Coolant

Coolant (antifreeze) is a special fluid that protects the vehicle's cooling system from freezing in winter and overheating in summer. It’s made of water and chemical additives that prevent freezing at low temperatures and heat buildup during operation.

Main Functions:

  • Heat Transfer: It removes heat from the engine to prevent overheating.

  • Corrosion Protection: Contains inhibitors to protect metal components from corrosion.

Why Regular Coolant Replacement Is Important:

  • Prevents Corrosion: Inhibitors wear out over time, making the system vulnerable.

  • Maintains Cooling Efficiency: Old coolant loses thermal transfer properties.

  • Prevents Leaks: Degraded coolant can damage seals and cause leaks.

  • Prolongs Component Life: Protects the radiator, thermostat, and hoses from breakdown.

Coolant Replacement Frequency:

  • General Guidelines: Every 2–5 years or 50,000–100,000 km. Always follow your car’s manufacturer instructions.

  • Coolant Type: Organic (OAT) or hybrid (HOAT) coolants last longer but still need periodic checks.

  • Visual Inspection: Replace coolant if it appears dirty, rusty, has a bad odor, or sediment buildup.

  • Operating Conditions: Frequent towing, hot climates, or harsh conditions may require more frequent changes.

  • Check Levels Regularly: Make it part of routine vehicle maintenance.
