How to Start a Manual (Stick-Shift) Car
Before starting the car, ensure safety and comfort:
-
Walk around the vehicle and check all tires. The driver is responsible for vehicle condition.
-
Inside the car, wear seat belts, adjust mirrors and seat, engage the central lock, and turn on the headlights.
Steps to start:
-
Ensure the gear lever is in neutral (center position).
-
Press the clutch pedal fully to disengage the engine from the gearbox.
-
Insert the ignition key and turn to “start” (or press the start button in vehicles with keyless systems), while holding the brake or clutch.
-
After ignition, keep the throttle pressed slightly, especially when the engine is cold—to raise RPMs and aid warming.
-
Release the parking brake if applied.
-
Signal your intent to move by using the turn indicator.
-
Slowly release the clutch and gently apply gas to begin smooth movement. Use first gear to start moving, then shift to second.
-
In cold weather, let components warm gradually—don’t exceed 60 km/h until the “cold engine” indicator turns off.
