How to Start a Manual (Stick-Shift) Car

Before starting the car, ensure safety and comfort:

  1. Walk around the vehicle and check all tires. The driver is responsible for vehicle condition.

  2. Inside the car, wear seat belts, adjust mirrors and seat, engage the central lock, and turn on the headlights.

Steps to start:

  1. Ensure the gear lever is in neutral (center position).

  2. Press the clutch pedal fully to disengage the engine from the gearbox.

  3. Insert the ignition key and turn to “start” (or press the start button in vehicles with keyless systems), while holding the brake or clutch.

  4. After ignition, keep the throttle pressed slightly, especially when the engine is cold—to raise RPMs and aid warming.

  5. Release the parking brake if applied.

  6. Signal your intent to move by using the turn indicator.

  7. Slowly release the clutch and gently apply gas to begin smooth movement. Use first gear to start moving, then shift to second.

  8. In cold weather, let components warm gradually—don’t exceed 60 km/h until the “cold engine” indicator turns off.
