Correct Tire Pressure

Maintaining proper tire pressure depends on both the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations and the type of tires installed. You can find recommended pressure values in the vehicle’s manual or on stickers located on the driver-side door frame or in the trunk. These values are usually given in PSI or bar.

General Guidelines:

  • Check the manual: Always follow the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressures.

  • Inspect regularly: Check tire pressure at least once a month or before long trips.

  • Avoid under- or over-inflation: Low pressure can reduce handling, increase tire wear, and raise fuel consumption; over-inflation decreases comfort and road grip.

  • Measure cold: Check pressure when tires are cool, before driving.

  • Adjust for load: Heavier loads may require different pressures—see manufacturer guidelines.

Effects of Low Pressure:

  • Increases tire contact patch → higher fuel consumption

  • Decreases ride stiffness → more comfort but reduced handling

  • Causes uneven tire wear and overheating

Effects of High Pressure:

  • Stiff ride and less comfort

  • Longer braking distances due to smaller contact area

  • Faster, uneven tire wear

  • Better cornering stability (often used in race cars)
